Hello Bomber Army,

Firstly I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your ongoing support shown to the Skye Football Netball Club in the recent weeks. Obviously our club like all other sporting clubs across the country are currently in lock down and eagerly awaiting to be back out on the all playing fields, however the health and safety of our players, coaches, volunteers and community is the clubs number one priority.

As many of you may be aware, the Skye Football Netball Club held our AGM in November 2019, and a new executive committee and general committee was formed. I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank outgoing President – Jason Forsyth and the committee for their hard work and achievements last year. I can ensure this year, we will continue on the hard work set and see the bombers fly up.

As mentioned the Skye Football Netball Club has assembled the following Executive & General Committee for season 2020. I would like to welcome back all members from the previous seasons and make special mention to those joining this proud club for the first time in off field roles. I am truly appreciative to have you on board and look forward to working closely with you all during the year ahead.

President :                       Micky Kane

I would like to personally thank each and every one of you for all your hard work and efforts in recent months whether it be social calendar planning, player registration, fundraising, sponsorship opportunities , social media content and most importantly contributing on setting the following values that will see the club continue to be force off field for many years to come.

  • Professionalism

  • Respect

  • Inclusive

  • Fun

  • Commitment

COVID 19 Update :

With the current status of COVID 19 and the holt to the 2020 season currently, the SFNL are communication with all clubs and have advised the earliest that the SFNL will be able to resume playing is 31st May 2020. This effectively means Saturday 6th June 2020 would be our return date to play.

Saying this, the Senior Metropolitan Leagues are scheduled for an teleconference again on 14th April 2020 to review this date in the context of the further Coronavirus developments. Our club will continue to update all members, players, coaches and supporters as we progress along this journey.

We ask the community to follow government guidelines so we stop the spread of this virus, and no doubt we will be back enjoying each other’s company down at “The Hanger” sooner rather than later.

Len Phelps Pavilion Development Update:

Our much loved home “THE HANGER” is finally receiving some much needed TLC and with internal alterations. Construction is well underway and is scheduled to be completed by end of May 2020. These works have been very long overdue and will bring new lease of life for both Football & Netball operations down at our club. Works will include;

  • Female Friendly Change Rooms & Toilets

  • First Aid Room

  • Improved Umpire Facilities

We thank the Sonya Kilkenny MP & Frankston City Council for their support.

In closing, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support shown to myself since recently being appointed as President of the Skye Football Netball Club. I am always on hand to lend support to all our players, members, sponsors & families in these unsettling times. I look forward to us all coming together as a community once given the green light in 2020.

Go Bombers!

Senior Coach Luke Martins Pre Season Report:

To Skye FNC members and supporters,

Preseason kicked off in early November last year. Our first night was a Wednesday and to my surprise we had 60-70 players on the track. It was a great way to start our 2020 campaign. While we didn’t quite get to those numbers again we generally had in excess of 40-50 each night up till now, seeing difference and new faces along the way.
Before we started and all the way through preseason, myself, the assistant coaches and the committee have been working extremely hard to attract and recruit players from other clubs. With the likes of Reece Stewart, Jayden Goldsmith, Jordan Frawley (Pines), Jordan Grollo (StKilda City), Tom Heuston (Upper Ferntree Gully), Ben Khongbut (Dandenong), Jack Henderson and the Napier brothers added, we believe we’ve bolstered our list significantly. We’ve also had Jesse Elms, Faisal Payenda and Nick Papas return to the club. All of them have shown promising signs in the off season and the practice matches played. We’ve managed to do all this while retaining most of our list from last year.

I honestly believe we are well in front of other teams as far as preseason training and match fitness is concerned. Unfortunately covid19 has decided to play havoc with this and all parts of life as we know it. This may allow other clubs to catch up to where we’re currently at but that depends on how our players respond to this crisis with their own training and fitness programs. I’ve sent out directives for them to follow and I’m confident most will do the right thing and have themselves match fit for when and if we get the season underway.

Look forward to seeing each and every one you when we are finally allowed back to the club. We as a coaching/playing group are headed in the right direction and I for one can’t wait for the boys to get out on the field and show the supporters how far we’ve come in the last 6 months. Fingers crossed it will be sooner rather than later. All the best during these trying times.

Netball Update:

Welcome to the Skye FNC Netball Team 2020.

Our start to the year saw us three players down with the welcome news of 3 new baby bombers arriving in 2020.  A big congratulations to Sarah Stevo, Veronica, Bridie and partners on the fantastic news.  This, combined with the loss of Danni Sharp in 2019 with a career ending ankle injury and two of our long standing club members in Talissa and Genna taking a break in season 2020, left us with only 5 of our 2019 team.

With some solid recruiting we have welcomed Brooke McGuire, Jess Cathcart, Kate Simpson, Tarryn Campbell, Aimee Unger, Angie Beness, Tash Green, Dani De Zeeuw and have a solid team when combined with returning players, Niki Clarke, Sarah Hill, Leah Green, Crystal Elliott, Lizzie Carrie. We continue to be supported by our fantastically dedicated operations staff in Deb McGuire and Wendy Wellington, as well as being supported off court by those players having a break Sarah and Bridie, with Veronica aiding in the position of assistant coach.

Pre-season training started with a bang and, as most of the girls had played in a domestic comp off season – we weren’t hampered by a lack of fitness going into the year. We started off like we had been training together for years and the vibe at training was energetic, positive and really enthusiastic. We are training at Flinders Christian College in Carrum Downs this season as we continue our journey towards gaining an onsite court.

Match play in tournament competitions at Lyndhurst  - C/D grade, and St Kilda City – A-D Grade, were a challenge as sections were combined in the one competition and with work, injury and family commitments we went to both tournaments with limited numbers.  Not to be deterred, the girls fought hard on both days finishing a respectable 4th in both and playing finals in both.  These days are tough as in total we play around 5-8 games which adds up to roughly 4 or 5 hours of game time with only short breaks in between. The girls held their heads high, were flexible in positions and left everyone feeling extremely proud.

The team as it stands looks extremely strong with versatile players across all positions.  We were and still are going into season 2020 with confidence in our ability and in our team – looking to a great year with positive results and a lot of fun.

While we face this minor set back the girls are staying strong as a unit.  We are keeping in touch via social media, sharing our at-home workouts and videos from various Netball Victoria sites, and all are encouraged to keep up their fitness as best they can.  This is a challenging time, physically and mentally, but as a group we are all there for each other to encourage support and mentor each other.

I’m confident that when we get back on the court – we will represent both ourselves and our Club proudly.  Looking forward to that day…

Yours in Netball and all things Skye Bombers

Karyn MadafferiVeronica Butterfield
