TAC ROUND 16

Skye Football Netball Club scored a fanstastic win over Caulfield at home on Round 16 (TAC Round). The Senior team wore black arm bands and our captain James Bateman wore the number zero representing towards zero. Skye Football Netball Club supports the Towards Zero Campaign to ensure that no one is seriously injured on our roads. The road toll has touched many of us and it is our job as a young club to come together and support this initiative and educate our players, members , supporters and general community on practising safety on our roads. We will continue to work hard to support this and spread the word.

Luke Martin appointed as senior coach

The Skye Football Netball Club are proud to announce and welcome Luke Martin as Senior coach for the 2019 season.

Luke is a new senior coach who has gained experience as senior assistant coach at Cranbourne Football Club working under Simon Goosey from 2015 to 2017. During this time, Luke was fortunate enough to experience premiership success in 2016.

Luke then moved onto Tooradin Dalmore Football Club to continue his coaching apprenticeship and now feels he is ready to lead his own team.

"I am excited for this opportunity", said Martin. "Developing young players and installing a modern game plan will be a high priority for me and the coaching team". Club president, Jason Forsyth, is equally as thrilled. "It is great to find such an enthusiastic young coach so late in the year. We are very excited to see what Luke can do with our young group".

The club is excited to have Luke onboard and we are looking forward to seeing the positive changes that await our great club in the 2019 season.

Senior Coach Appointed

Our club is proud to announce the appointment of Brad Sinclair as the senior coach in 2018.

Brad brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience after many years of coaching at various clubs. He has a genuine desire to drive our club to the next level.

"I'm really looking forward to getting back and coaching in the suburbs after spending the past 18 years on the road coaching country football", Sinclair states. "To come to a club who I have been extremely impressed with regarding their off-field ethic to make it a welcoming environment and a place for families to belong is very exciting".

When asked about what we can expect, he proclaimed; "Team first ethos will be the order of the day. To make sacrifices that will give the club every possible chance of playing and winning finals football".

It is certainly a changing of the guard at the Hangar with the club also appointing Faisal Payenda as the reserves coach and the hunt still well and truly on for a thirds coach. It is an exciting change that will bring a fresh outlook to what we want to achieve as a community.

"I look forward to working with an exciting list as well as a strong, progressive club in a professionally run competition", said Sinclair.

The club will be hosting a "meet-the-coach" evening in the next week at the Sands Hotel (date TBC). Keep an eye out on Facebook for updates as we invite all players, members and volunteers along to get informed and excited about season 2018.

Spencer's Cystic Fibrosis awareness game

In October 2015 Spencer was born with Cystic Fibrosis (CF). Parents, Olivia and Mathew, and family had little awareness and understanding of this devastating disease. Olivia and Mathew spend a minimum of an hour per day completing physio exercises to help clear Spencer's lungs and have to be constantly vigilant in taking him out in the cold or around others with the common cold or flu as it can take Spencer weeks to recover.

Cystic Fibrosis primarily affects the lungs and digestive system because of a malfunction in the exocrine system, responsible for producing saliva, sweat, tears and mucus.

There is currently no cure. People with CF develop an abnormal amount of excessively thick and sticky mucus within the lungs, airways and the digestive system. The mucus causes impairment of the digestive functions of the pancreas and traps bacteria in the lungs resulting in recurrent infections, which lead to irreversible damage and shorten sufferers life span. Lung failure is the major cause of death for someone with CF.

From birth, a person with CF undergoes constant medical treatments and physiotherapy.

CF is ‘autosomal recessive’ meaning that it occurs equally in males and females, the CF gene must be inherited from both parents and it can ‘skip’ generations.

In Australia, one in 2,500 babies are born with CF, that’s one every four days. On average one in 25 people carry the CF gene - most of whom are unaware that they are carriers. Because carriers of CF are unaffected (and therefore show no symptoms) it is hard for them to appreciate that CF may be a real risk. Any of us could be a carrier and we wouldn’t know – think about it, that’s about 1 million unaware carriers – it could be you!

On August 13 Skye Football club will don a special Guernsey featuring roses to help raise awareness of Cystic Fibrosis and its charity 65 Roses. Coach and uncle of Spencer, Ben Walker, said that raising awareness and money for Cystic Fibrosis was key in helping find medications and cures. The CF jumpers will be auctioned at the end of the game with all proceeds going to 65 Roses.

Skye Football Club welcome everyone who would like to show their support for CF to come to watch Skye take on Hampton from 2.00pm at Steve Thompson Oval, Wedge Road Carrum Downs.

For more information on Cystic Fibrosis visit http://www.cysticfibrosis.org.au/

Welcome Back Shane Rowley!

Shane Rowley has been appointed as reserves coach for the 2016 season.

Rowley returns to the club after three years and hopes to impart his football knowledge onto our young reserves players. The key focus for Rowley is to work with the coaching group to communicate and develop our reserves team into senior footballers.

"It is a terrific opportunity and I'm really looking forward to it", said Rowley of his appointment.

Rowley will join senior coach Ben Walker, under 19s coach Adam Lagerewskij and thirds coach Chris Rodrigues who have all been re-appointed to lead their respective teams in 2016.

In a joint venture with the Carrum Downs Junior Football Club, Jordan Thomas will coach a new under 17s team that will compete in the Mornington Peninsula competition. These under 17s players will have full access to all senior players and coaches as well as the opportunity to train with the main group in the preseason. This is a huge step forward in the future of our club.

Preseason kicks off on Monday November 30th. All new and returning players are reminded to keep an eye on the Facebook page for updates on preseason training venues.

Powlesland Powers to 50

Young Under 19s gun, Riely Powlesland, will this week line up for his 50th club game.

Riely came to the club from the Carrum Downs juniors and has become one of the most important players in the under 19s program. He has had another fantastic year in the under 19s after playing his first senior game in round 1.

Riely plays hard and with little regard for his own safety. He is a big piece of Skye's future and we are very proud to have him in the red, black and silver.

Congratulations Riely!

Bets of luck to the under 19s this weekend! You can catch them from 9:45am at Carrum Downs Rec Reserve tomorrow.
